Austintown hears flooding concerns

AUSTINTOWN — A resident, Michael Case, questioned Austintown Township trustees if anything could be done with the raging creek that runs behind his Frederick Street home.

He said the creek is a small one, but lately it has become a fast-flowing creek that is washing away its banks and enlarging the creek’s size. He said the fast flow has also uncovered Case’s sewer line, which was supposed to run under the creek.

“Don’t do anything right now,” township Administrator Mike Dockry said. “We are waiting for the (Mahoning County) sanitary engineer to look at it because their lines are being exposed.”

Dockry said the township may need to get equipment back in the area and could put riprap, or rock, along the creek to help stop the erosion that is taking place. He prefers to have the sanitary sewer checked out by the county first.

Case said he felt good about knowing the township already is looking at the problem.

In other business, zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli informed trustees he is working on an amendment to the township’s zoning regulations. The amendment would deal with bed and breakfasts and short term-rentals. He said it would help regulate anyone wanting to use their single family home as a short-term rental.

“It will require a public hearing and will have to go before the zoning board of appeals,” he said.
