Virus cases fall at nursing homes

COVID-19 cases in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across Ohio may have peaked last week, as the total case numbers declined this week.

Cases at Mahoning County facilities also appear to be declining.

The total number of cases at all facilities this week was 2,467 among patients, down 212 from last week’s number of 2,679. The number of staff cases across the state dropped from 4,114 to 3,699.

Mahoning County continued to have a large number of facilities with high case counts this week, but a notable drop in cases took place this week at the Assumption Village Nursing Home in North Lima, which had Mahoning County’s highest number of cases last week.

Assumption Village dropped from 39 total cases last week to 18 cases this week — 11 among patients and seven among staff. Last week, it had 20 cases of the virus among patients and 19 among staff.

Also dropping was the Greenbriar Center Nursing Home in Boardman, which has two patient and seven staff cases this week after having 14 patient and eight staff cases this week.

The numbers on the Ohio Department of Health website for Park Center Healthcare and Recovery Center Nursing home in Youngstown were high last week, but the numbers were not updated this week.

Among the facilities with high case numbers this week is the Windsor House at Omni Manor nursing home in Youngstown, which has 19 total cases this week — 15 among patients and four among staff. It had 10 total cases last week.

Another with high numbers is the Inn at Glenellen assisted-living facility in North Lima with 12 patient cases and one staff case after having a low number or no cases last week.

Others with at least four total cases are:

l Hampton Woods Nursing Center Nursing Home in Poland — two patient cases and five staff cases this week;

l Copeland Oaks Rest Home Assisted Living in Sebring — one patient case and five staff cases this week after having 15 staff cases last week.

Others with four cases or more are:

Humility House assisted living in Austintown, six patient cases and two staff cases; Austintown Healthcare Center nursing home in Austintown, six patient cases and one staff case; Masternick Memorial Healthcare Center nursing home in New Middletown, one patient case and six staff cases; Wickshire Poland assisted living in Poland, three patient and three staff cases; Humility House nursing home in Austintown, no patient and four staff cases; Ivy Woods Healthcare Center and Rehabilitation Center nursing home, no patient and four staff cases; Caprice Healthcare Center nursing home in North Lima, one patient and three staff cases.

In Trumbull County, three facilities have at least four cases this week — Gillette Nursing Home in Warren, three patient and six staff cases; Community Skilled Healthcare in Warren, one patient case and seven staff cases; and Washington Square Healthcare Center in Warren three patient and two staff cases.

Warren Nursing and Rehabilitation nursing home on North Road in Warren had 19 total cases last week, but the number dropped to zero this week.

Only four cases among two Columbiana County facilities were listed this week on the ODH website.

Only Trumbull County had any COVID-19-related deaths this week among long-term care facilities such as nursing homes. Its number rose by three to 176. Mahoning County’s total of deaths remained at 303, and Columbiana County’s number remained at 87.

Among the area prisons, the number of staff cases at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown remained at 59 this week, but the number of inmate cases dropped from 11 to eight.

The case count dropped among staff at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown this week from 14 to six; inmate cases rose from zero to five.

The Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg saw another big decline in staff cases this week, dropping from 34 last week to 12 this week. Its inmate cases dropped from nine to seven.
