Second evaluation ordered on accused man

Indicted in deaths of man, mother at home

YOUNGSTOWN — Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court has ordered that a second evaluation be carried out on Jabrae L. Perry, 44, to determine whether he is competent to stand trial and whether he was sane at the time he is accused of killing a woman and her son.

Perry is indicted on aggravated murder and a specification in the death of Brandon Bell, 28, and murder in the death of Ayanna Mills, 49, both in a home in the 1200 block of Salt Springs Road on Aug. 24.

In a judgment entry this week, Durkin approved the examination and ordered the Mahoning County jail to allow Sylvania O’Bradovich of Summit Psychological Associates of Akron to enter the facility to carry out the evaluation.

The judge also ordered that all further proceedings in the case be postponed until after the results of the evaluation are provided.

Police have described the fatal shootings as domestic related. Perry is accused of first killing Mills, who prosecutors described as Perry’s girlfriend, and then killing Bell to escape detection for killing Mills. The killings may have happened as much as 12 hours apart, prosecutors said.

Perry is accused of killing Bell when Bell discovered his mother had been killed, according to the prosecution. Bell was checking on his mother because she had not shown up for work that day. Mills was dead at the scene. Bell was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he later died.

If Perry is convicted of certain offenses, he could get the death penalty.

In addition to the two murder charges, Perry was indicted on being a felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence and grand theft of a motor vehicle.
