Boardman welcomes new safety personnel

BOARDMAN — A new police officer and firefighter will be joining the ranks in Boardman and they are eager to protect and serve the township.

Township trustees on Tuesday night swore Alex Sepesy in to the fire department and Justin Binkiewicz in to the police department.

Sepesy, 23, of Youngstown, follows in the footsteps of his father, David Sepesy Sr., who served as a firefighter in Struthers for 33 years. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School and served as a firefighter in Youngstown for the last four years. Fire Chief Mark Pitzer wrote in a statement that Sepesy is a dedicated family man and is proud to carry on his father’s legacy of hard work and service.

Binkiewicz, 26, a Columbus native, recently graduated from the Youngstown State University police academy and served in the Army National Guard for the past eight years. This is his first police job. Police Capt. Ed McDonnell said he hired Binkiewicz for his good sense of humor and desire to protect and serve the community.

“One of the things that impressed me when I was interviewing him was his sense of humor, and he expressed a willingness to serve and be a part of the community — and that was a big point that he kept pushing, and that really hit home with me,” McDonnell said.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the purchase of a Hughes Equipment service body from Quality Truck Body for $16,328.

• Approved the purchase of an Elgin street sweeper from Jack Doheny Companies Inc. for $220,796.

• Accepted a donation of $157 on behalf of the fire department from the attendees of the 2021 Boardman Fire open house. The money will be used to replace the flags at the safety services memorial.
