Mahoning fifth in state for virus cases

County almost twice state average; Ohio still below 1K per day

The Mahoning Valley’s three counties have some of the highest rates of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people in Ohio, with Mahoning County almost twice the state’s average.

The number of cases in Ohio continues to decline greatly as it does for Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

However, the three local counties remain in the top quarter of the state’s 88 counties in COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past two weeks, with Mahoning at fifth with 100.1 cases.

The state average for the two weeks between May 20 and Wednesday is 54.9 cases per 100,000 residents, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The ODH measures cases per 100,000 residents to provide a fair comparison among counties as giving total case numbers would result in more-populous counties ranking higher.

Trumbull is 13th in the state at 71.7 cases per 100,000 residents, while Columbiana is 21st at 62.8 cases.

Of the state’s 88 counties, 31 were over the state average and 57 were under it.

The top county is Monroe at 161.1 cases per 100,000, while Vinton is last with no cases for the past two weeks.

The state last week was at 82.3 cases per 100,000 residents.

At the same time, Mahoning was at 146.5 cases, the third-most in the state, while Trumbull was 12th at 105.1 cases and Columbiana was 18th at 96.2 cases.

Two weeks ago, the state was at 97.1 cases per 100,000 with Mahoning at 150, the fourth-most cases among counties. Trumbull was 15th at 118.7 cases and Columbiana was 14th at 118.8 cases.

The 621 new cases Friday are down from the daily average of 697 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.

The state had a total of 1,104,001 COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 1,068,562 presumed recovered and 19,980 deaths.

Ohio has been below 1,000 new cases per day for 13 straight days.

The ODH provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays. However, fatalities weren’t reported until Wednesday this week because of Memorial Day, according to the ODH.

An increase of 57 deaths since Wednesday includes four in Trumbull and two in Mahoning counties.

Mahoning County had 22,242 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 21,153 presumed recovered and 595 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,466 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 15,642 presumed recovered and 478 deaths.

Columbiana County had 8,995 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 8,644 presumed recovered and 229 deaths.
