Man facing 3 counts of attempted murder

YOUNGSTOWN — Shawta T. Hasley, 25, of St. Louis Avenue, was arraigned Wednesday on three counts of attempted murder in the Friday night shooting of three females.

The victims are a city girl, 17, and women from the city ages 18 and 19.

Youngstown police and jail records indicate that police arrested Hasley on Wednesday after observing the driver of a gray 2008 Lexus IS300 committing a traffic violation on East Florida Avenue on the South Side and made a traffic stop on Hasley.

At the time of the traffic stop, an arrest warrant on three counts of attempted murder were on file for him, and he was taken into custody.

Police said officers saw the vehicle stop at a stop sign, then put on the left turn signal, which is illegal.

The driver turned left on to Erie Street and continued at a high rate of speed, then slowed down and stopped at a stop sign at East Auburndale Avenue and Rush Boulevard.

It allowed an officer to catch up and activate his lights and sirens. But the vehicle continued east on East Auburndale and eventually pulled into an apartment complex parking lot at 3332 South Ave., police said.

Hasley also was issued a ticket for a turn signal violation and a citation for driving under suspension.

Police were called to the 100 block of Willis Avenue at 6:57 p.m. Friday and found the 17-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the neck. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Police were advised that the two other women showed up at the hospital also with gunshot wounds. Two of the three females were still at the hospital as of Monday, but all were expected to survive, police said.

A city woman is listed in the police report as a suspect in the case.

During an arraignment hearing Wednesday, bond of $1.5 million was set for Hasley on three attempted murder charges. He will return to court for a 9:15 a.m. preliminary hearing May 21 if he is not indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury before then.
