Girard incumbent moves to Nov. election

GIRARD — Incumbent Thomas Grumley will appear on the November ballot for the city’s 4th Ward seat after handily beating a challenge from Rashaan Dykes for the Democratic nomination.

Grumley beat Dykes by a vote of 72 to 34, according to incomplete and unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections. Grumley received 68 percent of the vote while Dykes received 32 percent.

“I want to thank the residents of the 4th Ward for the support and I will continue to work tirelessly for the residents of the 4th Ward and for the betterment of the city of Girard,” Grumley said.

Prior to the election, Grumley said he wants to continue the projects on which he’s been working, including regionalization of the fire department.

“My sole reasoning into looking into (regionalization) is for the safety of the firemen and the most efficient and best possible service we can provide to the community,” Grumley said.

Grumley also plans to continue to pursue grants for infrastructure repairs. One of the projects Grumley is fond of is the lines on Trumbull Hill. He said he has been working with the administration to take care of them. Grumley also said he’s looking at controlling blight in the city.

Grumley has said he wants to help residents before properties become blighted, but understands demolition is necessary in some cases. He added controlling vacant buildings downtown — by the owners either bringing the buildings up to code or by the city taking control of them — would help bring new businesses to the city.

“We’re starting to make strides on getting rid of some of the blight downtown and putting the owners on notice,” Grumley said.

He added he’s proud of the work done in Stambaugh and Liberty parks, as well as the work done in the 4th Ward, especially with street paving. He said for the last five years and into 2021, a total of $796,000 has been invested in street paving in the ward.

Dykes said the election experience was a great one.

“I learned a lot,” he said. “I haven’t thought about running in the future, but this was a great experience.”
