YOUNGSTOWN — A Cortland man is in Mahoning County jail awaiting a hearing May 12 before a federal judge on a charge of attempt to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Michael Ellens Jr., 43, was arrested Monday by federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

An affidavit supporting the federal criminal complaint against Ellens accused him of accepting a package containing about 1,000 grams of field-tested fentanyl.

That package was mailed to a Randolph Street NW, Warren, address and was intercepted by a U.S. postal inspector on April 29. The package was suspicious for containing drugs, according to the inspector, identified as Jason Parillo of the Cleveland office.

The next day, the parcel was placed into a lineup with blank parcels and narcotic detection was positively made by Nix, a Canfield police dog handled by Patrolman Aaron Young, the affidavit states.

After obtaining a federal search warrant, agents surveyed its contents and a GPS device was placed inside. The parcel, which had a Fresno, California, return address, was delivered at 11:56 a.m. Monday to the Randolph Street home, where a woman accepted it.

DEA agents followed the woman, who took a bag into a Buick and left the residence headed to a Brier Street SE, Warren, address where agents tracked the GPS signal. About 1:40 p.m. Monday, Ellens received the package and opened it. Ellens was arrested about 2:05 p.m., the affidavit states, and he was taken to the Trumbull County sheriff’s office, where he admitted ownership of the “kilo” of drugs.

Court records show Ellens will appear before federal Magistrate Carmen Henderson at 11:30 p.m. May 12 for a detention hearing.
