Youngstown schools again planning on virtual graduations

YOUNGSTOWN — For the second consecutive year, the Youngstown City School District will not have traditional graduation ceremonies for its seniors.

The school district is expected to have virtual commencements similar to what was done in 2020.

Last year, students went to Stambaugh Auditorium and crossed the stage, one at a time, with family members in the audience, according to district CEO Justin Jennings.

Speeches were recorded and each student received a DVD of the ceremony.

The school district once again will rent Stambaugh for three graduation ceremonies and have those commencements recorded and edited.

“Having the virtual graduations will allow scholars to have up to four members of their families there,” Jennings said. “Otherwise, we only would be able to provide two tickets per graduate and the family would have to choose whether to allow mother and father, mother and grandmother or others at the graduation.”

Seniors will get caps and gowns, according to district officials.

Jennings said there will not be a large prom, but walk-through proms will be held, in which students will be able to dance with their partners and get their photographs taken.

Dates have not been announced.
