Spring milestones to be part of Canfield calendar this year

CANFIELD — End-of-year traditions are taking shape for students in the Canfield Local School district.

Over the last three days of this school year, fifth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School will take part in a decades-long tradition when they go to Camp Fitch.

Confirmation came during a Board of Education meeting Wednesday, when CVMS Principal Judd Rubin said he worked hard to sway Superintendent Joseph Knoll to allow the students to go.

“I want to thank Mr. Knoll,” Rubin began. During intial conversations regarding Camp Fitch, the superintendent had student safety in mind when it came to COVID-19.

However, Rubin was persistant and following conversations with staff at the camp, Knoll agreed to allow for the trip, which will be June 2-4.

Nearly the entire fifth grade class at CVMS is going, Rubin said.

Board member Dave Wilkeson “strongly moves for approval” for the motion, with board member Nader Atway “excitedly” seconding the motion.

Atway thanked Rubin and Knoll for the opportunity, sharing he has a fifth-grade son who is looking forward to the trip.

“It took a lot of analysis and discussion and making sure safety was first,” Atway said.

Canfield High School Principal Michael Moldovan said one tradition that was done in a non-traditional way last year — graduation — will go on this year.

Graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 28. It will be held outdoors on the field. A rain date is Saturday, May 29. If that weekend is a rainy wash-out, Moldovan said a third backup plan will be shared once it is ironed out, as discussions are ongoing with seniors who are providing input.

Prom is also a-go, with tickets currently being sold to seniors. Any leftover at the end of this week will be offered to juniors on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Knoll and district Treasurer Pattie Prince will present a state of school address during the May 12 board meeting, outlining the vision for the district next year. As a result, the board meeting will begin at 5:15 p.m.

Information will be forthcoming in the days leading up to the meeting, Knoll said.
