Youngstown school board holds forum with district parents

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Board of Education by a 7-0 vote approved Tuesday a resolution of concern asking that district CEO Justin Jennings collaborate and communicate more with the board.

The board wants more sharing of information on matters of mutual interest and about operations of the district, including managerial and instructional efforts.

Board President Ronald Shadd said the board is asking Jennings to refrain from pulling the superintendent, treasurer and other personnel away from board meetings they are scheduled to attend, and to avoid scheduling CEO meetings that conflict with scheduled board meetings.

“We are just asking for courtesy of proper notice to the board if the superintendent, treasurer or others are unable to attend. We are asking for collaboration,” Shadd said.

He said the purpose of the resolution is that Jennings knew five days in advance of the two meetings — the board meeting and Jennings’ CEO update session — and did not reach out to the board ensuring there would be collaboration.

“He is here to help repair and transition our district,” Shadd said.

Superintendent Joseph Meranto said Jennings never told him not to attend a board meeting, but he felt it was important to attend Jennings’ CEO update session.

“When I attend his update meetings, I bring information back to the board,” Meranto said. “I was going to the CEO’s meeting and then was going to join the board later at their meeting. His meeting was short. It was my choice of the reason I chose to attend his meeting.”

Board member Brenda Kimble said the board is just asking for more cooperation.

In other school news, seeking to provide information on literacy and college awareness to parents of students, the district is having a Parent YOU (Parent University) program 5 to 7 p.m. today.

The program will be virtual, with discussion on four pathways: social-emotional learning / health and well-being; literacy; diversity; and college awareness for families of English learners.

Officials said the event will include sessions on healthy meal preparation on a budget, using storytelling to bolster reading skills, navigating online bullying and college awareness for families of English learners.

The meeting will be on Zoom and the link may be found on the district website, ycsd.org, under the “For Parents” tab.

Parents select one of the pathways and follow it through the end of the year.

Board member Tina Cvetkovich asked, with all students and staff have faced this school year due to COVID-19 and other factors, what will be done by the school district to help students who need extra help catching up in different subject areas.

Jennings said a plan being worked on is to offer a summer school program June 9 to July 7 along with two days of summer enrichment with the schools working with other agencies, such as Boys and Girls Club, Jewish Community Center, Youngstown Youth Incubator, Chess is Life, United Way and YMCA. He said relief funds will cover any expenses.

“The students will work on different class work based on their test scores. Staff members who are teaching summer school will look at the data to prepare the lessons to help the students,” he said.

Jennings said Thursday and Friday during the summer will be various enrichment programs with more than 30 community partners.

He said after July 7, the enrichment program will continue into August.
