WHAT: Board of Education meeting Tuesday

PRESENT: Ronald Shadd, Tina Cvetkovich, Jacqueline Adair, Brenda Kimble, Tiffany Patterson, Juanita Walker and Jerome Williams

The board:

• Passed a resolution recognizing Kimble for her work with the school district and her future work and endeavors at the state level with the Ohio School Board Association and the Black Caucus for the next three years;

• Heard from Adair who questioned why there was such a need for so many substitute teachers in the schools when teachers just returned to hybrid in-person learning two weeks ago. She said there was one day when 29 substitutes were needed. Jennings said some staff have gone home ill. He said while more than 900 staff members have received the COVID-19 vaccine, not all did;

• Were informed an informational presentation will be held in the future on Choffin Career Center and what programs students may be interested in taking. Williams said machine trades, auto mechanic and carpentry are among key programs students take part in;

• Heard from Superintendent Joseph Meranto that the school district will be working with the new Mahoning Valley Innovation Center opening in the fall.

• Heard from Jennings of discussing new elective courses students in high school can take, including studio art and music in addition to the required courses needed for graduation.
