Aide loses eligibility to work in nursing homes after abuse

YOUNGSTOWN — Because Samantha Garlow, 24, of James Street SE in Warren, was convicted Tuesday of patient abuse related to her former job, she is ineligible to work in a nursing home, the Ohio Department of Health said Wednesday.

Her conviction also will appear in a background check, and facilities are prohibited from hiring her because of the conviction, Rachel Belenker, assistant counsel for the Ohio Department of Health, stated in an email.

Garlow was working as a state tested nurse’s aide at Victoria House assisted living center, 5295 Ashley Circle in Austintown, when she struck an elderly resident, Mahoning County prosecutors said.

Garlow pleaded guilty in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to felony patient abuse and was sentenced to two years of probation and 30 hours of community service.

The March 2019 incident left a mark on the victim’s body, but she did not require hospitalization, prosecutors said.
