YCSD Parent YOU meets today

YOUNGSTOWN — The first Youngstown City School District Parent YOU begins at 5 p.m. today, with speakers focusing on money management, literacy, diversity, and, for families of English learners, early college awareness.

The Parent YOU (Parent University) runs monthly through May with graduation planned for June. It’s part of P.R.I.D.E., or Parents Realizing Involvement Determines Education.

School district CEO Justin Jennings said the virtual meeting will allow parents to participate in sessions designed to educate and inspire.

“We selected topics and speakers we believe will help parents themselves and help them help their scholars as well,” he said.

Parent YOU offers four pathways: social-emotional learning / health and well-being, literacy, diversity and college awareness for English learners families. Parents select one of the pathways and follow it through the end of the year.

Youngstown native Damon Carr, a graduate of The Rayen School, will talk to parents about how to find wiggle room in their budgets in his presentation, “Get A Grip … On Your Money.” Carr is a money coach and personal finance columnist.

Michelle Elia of the Ohio Department of Education’s Literacy Team will review the science of reading and how parents can use it at home to help their students become better readers.

Representatives from the Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio will talk about diversity and inclusion as well as unconscious bias and micro-messaging.

School counselors Ann-Marie Meade and Jorge Vega Santos will help families of English learners in grades eight through 11 understand what’s involved in preparing for college.
