Police: Man accused of kicking in door is shot

NILES — A Youngstown man is in critical condition after being shot by a woman early Tuesday after her door was kicked in.

Niles police were called to 181 Royal Mall Drive about 1:15 a.m. for shots fired, according to a 911 call sheet.

A police department news release states 27-year-old Rodney Darrell Cole, of Parkview Drive, Youngstown, was found at the residence with a gunshot wound to the torso. Officers found the door to the residence was kicked in, a shell casing, and a gun in Cole’s waistband.

The call sheet states he was conscious and breathing, but no other information was given by the caller before the call was disconnected.

The news release states Cole lied about where the shooting took place, saying it happened at a local bar. After investigating further, officers discovered Cole and the woman who shot him have a child together.

“It appears the male came to the residence with ill intentions, kicking the back door in to force his entry into the apartment,” the release states.

The woman and a small child were in an upstairs bedroom when Cole came up the stairs and brandished a firearm. She then pulled out her own gun and shot him once in the torso. The “falsehood” about being shot at a bar was thought up following the call to police, according to the news release.

Cole was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and is in serious condition, the report states.

Niles detectives are still investigating, and no charges have been filed against the woman.

“We will meet with the prosecutor when the investigation is complete to decide on who and what will be charged,” Niles police Chief Jay Holland said. “She faces no charges and was released at this time.”

According to the call sheet, about 2:50 a.m. Cole was in stable condition and going to a room in the hospital.

A few neighbors told the newspaper they didn’t hear anything. One said she woke up when she heard the ambulance and police vehicles.
