Ohio virus cases fall for 4th day

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio increased daily over the past three days, but for the first time in three months, the number is below 4,000 for four consecutive days.

The state was barely below 4,000 Wednesday with 3,991 COVID-19 cases reported.

But the number of cases in Ohio continues to trend down. It was just a month ago that the state was averaging about 7,500 COVID-19 cases per day.

In addition to 3,991 Wednesday, the state had 3,011 cases Sunday, 3,287 Monday and 3,657 Tuesday.

The state’s daily average number of cases for the past 21 days is 5,099. That daily average was 6,451 a week ago.

However, the 94 newly reported COVID-19 deaths reported Wednesday are more than the daily average of 74 for the past 21 days in the state.

In the Mahoning Valley, no new COVID-19 deaths were reported Wednesday.

The state had 906,727 total COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday with 799,819 presumed recovered and 11,430 deaths.

Mahoning County had 18,229 total COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday with 16,175 presumed recovered and 339 fatalities, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The ODH reported Trumbull County had 13,393 total COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday with 12,005 presumed recovered and 325 deaths.

Columbiana County had 7,665 total COVID-19 cases as of Wednesday with 6,750 presumed recovered and 130 deaths, according to the ODH.

VACCINATIONS

The ODH reported as of 6 a.m. Wednesday that 908,096 people in the state had received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination — that is needed to be given in two doses about three to four weeks apart — including 25,586 in the previous 24 hours.

That is 7.77 percent of the state’s population.

Of those getting the first dose, 254,795 are at least 80 years old and 164,287 are between 70 and 79. The state made those at least 80 eligible for the vaccination Jan. 18. On Jan. 25, it lowered the age to 75 and then to 70 this past Monday.

It will go to 65 years next Monday and hold there “for a number of weeks,” Gov. Mike DeWine said.

In comparison, 8.94 percent of Mahoning County’s population (20,442 people), 7.62 percent of Trumbull County’s population (15,094 people) and 7.24 percent of Columbiana County’s population (7,377 people) have received at least a first inoculation.

The ODH also reported that 217,058 people in the state have received both doses of the vaccine as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, including 17,056 in the previous 24 hours.

That is 1.86 percent of the state’s population.

In Mahoning County, 1.98 percent of the population (4,526 people), 1.31 percent of Trumbull’s population (2,571 people) and 1.62 percent of Columbiana’s population (1,646 people) have received both doses, according to the ODH.
