Ohio nears 1M first-dose COVID-19 vaccinations

Ohio is approaching 1 million people receiving at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination — and may exceed it today.

The Ohio Department of Health reported Friday that 974,586 people had received at least the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, including 39,481 since Thursday’s report.

The ODH normally provides those daily numbers as of 6 a.m., but noted Friday because of a “technical issue, there was a delay in the normal time that vaccine numbers were updated” that day. As a result, the number reported Thursday was for more than 24 hours, and the new vaccine number for today will be for fewer.

As of Friday, 8.34 percent of the state’s population had at least one dose of the vaccine. The vaccine is given in two doses, three to four weeks apart.

In comparison, 9.62 percent of Mahoning County’s population (21,992 people), 8.5 percent of Trumbull County’s population (16,824 people) and 7.93 percent of Columbiana County’s population (8,082 people) had received at least the first dose as of Friday.

The ODH also reported 264,499 people as of Friday had received both doses of the vaccine, including 25,713 in the past day with the “technical issue” impacting that number.

That’s 2.26 percent of the state’s population getting both doses.

In Mahoning, 2.48 percent of the population (5,678 people) had received both inoculations compared to 1.66 percent in Trumbull (3,283 people) and 2.04 percent in Columbiana (2,075 people).

CASES DECLINE

Newly reported COVID-19 cases have been fewer than 4,000 for five of the past six days.

On Friday, 3,683 new cases were reported. After four straight days below 4,000, Ohio went higher than that number Thursday with 4,120 cases and then dropped again Friday.

The Friday number is less than the daily average of 4,766 COVID-19 cases for the past 21 days in the state.

Ohio had 914,530 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 812,707 presumed recovered and 11,571 deaths.

The state reported 62 new deaths Friday, lower than the daily average of 72 during the past 21 days. Among the deaths reported Friday were one each in Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

The ODH listed 18,390 total COVID-19 cases in Mahoning County as of Friday with 16,399 presumed recovered and 340 deaths.

Trumbull County had 13,486 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 12,123 presumed recovered and 332 deaths, according to the ODH.

Columbiana County had 7,722 total cases as of Friday with 6,859 presumed recovered and 132 fatalities, according to the ODH. But the county’s health district reported 7,478 total COVID-19 cases with 7,279 presumed recovered and 135 deaths as of Friday.
