Man shot in apartment faces charges

NILES — A Youngstown man who was shot after being accused of kicking in the door to a woman’s residence is now facing charges.

Rodney Cole, 27, of Parkview Drive, Youngstown, is charged with felony aggravated burglary. He remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the torso, and Niles police Chief Jay Holland said his condition is serious.

According to a police department news release, Cole kicked in the door at 181 Royal Mall Drive early Tuesday. Officers were called to the residence about 1:15 a.m. and found Cole shot in the chest.

According to the police report, he was shot by the woman after he brandished a firearm. She pulled her own gun and shot him.

Cole was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The woman has not been charged.

According to Niles Municipal Court, there is a warrant for Cole’s arrest on the aggravated burglary charge and for a probation violation following Tuesday’s shooting.

In August 2020, he was arrested for domestic violence, but pleaded down to disorderly conduct and was placed on probation until March of this year.

The felony charge could carry a maximum of three to 11 years in prison and a fine of $20,000 if found guilty. The charge is not bondable.

No court date has been set.

“Hopefully the hospital will notify us when he’s being released so we can pick him up,” Holland said.
