Workers’ compensation giving $5B to Ohio

Staff report

Numerous government entities and school districts in Mahoning and Trumbull counties will share in a $5 billion dividend disbursement from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

The BWC voted last week to return the dividends “to ease the continued impact of COVID-19 on the state’s business community and workforce,” according to a news release from the agency.

The $5 billion that will be sent to public and private employers in mid-December is the third distribution and brings the total amount of dividends distributed to nearly $8 billion. The agency issued a $1.54 billion dividend in late April and $1.34 billion in October. At $5 billion, the latest dividend is approximately four times the total premiums BWC collected from its employer members in policy year 2019, the agency stated.

BWC will apply the dividend to an employer’s unpaid balances first, then send a check for the remainder in mid-December.

In Trumbull County, private employers will receive $10.2 million, and public employers will receive $60 million for a total of $70.2 million. In Mahoning County, private employers will received $14.8 million and public employers will receive $90.1 million for a total of $104.9 million.
