Ohio nears 5K killed by novel coronavirus

One day after setting a new record for reported COVID-19 cases in a day, Ohio added another 1,356 cases on Saturday, bringing its total to 167,458.

If the death numbers increase at the same pace as they have the past several days, the state will surpass the 5,000 mark today. Ohio has recorded 4,997 deaths from the virus as of Saturday, an increase of three since Friday, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

None of those deaths occurred locally, with Trumbull holding at 133, Mahoning at 282 and Columbiana at 86.

Trumbull County reported 2,069 cases as of Saturday, an increase of six since Friday. Mahoning County recorded 3,352 cases as of Saturday, an increase of 11 in 24 hours. Columbiana had the smallest increase in the Mahoning Valley at four, bringing its total since the pandemic began to 2,010.

Gov. Mike DeWine paid a visit to the area Friday — the same day Ohio set a record of newly reported cases at 1,840. His visit also came a day after both Mahoning and Trumbull counties reached Level 3 (red) on the Ohio Public Health Advisory System.

To reach Level 3, a county must reach four to five of seven indicators on the state system. Mahoning and Trumbull both had four. Neighboring Portage County also is at Level 3 with four indicators. Columbiana and Ashtabula remain at Level 2.
