Fire destroys Austintown home

AUSTINTOWN — Fire destroyed a township home Thursday morning, leaving several adults homeless.

A dozen Austintown firefighters were dispatched at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday to 4169 Crum Road. They saw the fire was already burning through the roof, said assistant Chief Dave Schertzer.

It took the crew more than three hours to put out the blaze. Schertzer said the residence will be considered total loss.

The Lake to River Chapter of the Red Cross was called to assist the residents. Jim McIntyre, regional communications officer, said the organization was able to help the four adult victims with some money and comfort kits comprised of personal hygiene items.

The cause of the fire is not known, but Shertzer said he doesn’t suspect foul play. An investigation continues.
