13th District debate takes place Monday

Incumbent Ryan faces off against Hagan and Fricke

YOUNGSTOWN — The three candidates running for the 13th Congressional District seat will participate in a Monday debate.

The Youngstown Press Club Debate, in which Vindicator politics writer David Skolnick will serve as a panelist, will be livestreamed on The Vindicator website from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Go to www.vindy.com to launch the livestream.

Debating will be U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, the nine-term incumbent; Christina Hagan, a Republican from Marlboro Township and former Ohio House representative; and Michael Fricke, a Libertarian from Kent and a scientist.

The 13th District includes portions of Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage, Summit and Stark counties.

The event is co-hosted by the Youngstown Press Club and the Youngstown State University Department of Communications.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the debate at Stambaugh Auditorium will not be open to the public. This is the only scheduled debate among the candidates for this congressional district seat.

Adam Earnheardt, a YSU professor, will moderate the event.

Four panelists will ask questions of the candidates. The panelists have been announced: Skolnick, Derek Steyer from WFMJ, George Nelson from The Business Journal and Abigail Cloutier of The Jambar.

Fundraising and spending in the two campaigns are strong. Hagan and Ryan began airing commercials last month.

Ryan had his strongest fundraising quarter in his nearly 18 years in Congress, raising $586,146 between July and September.

Ryan also spent $604,115 during the three months with $251,302 going to CounterPoint Messaging LLC of Nashville, Tenn., to produce commercials and buy time on television and social media.

The campaign of Hagan said it raised close to $500,000 during the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the Ohio Freedom Fund — a special interest group based in Washington, D.C., backing Hagan — reported raising $152,520 during the third quarter and spending $150,060.

All of the money came from Invest in Ohio, another dark money group, between Sept. 3 and 16.

Of the money spent, $150,000 was paid to Medium Buying LLC of Columbus for media advertisements between Sept. 9 and 18 in support of Hagan and opposition of Ryan.

During the Republican primary, the Ohio Freedom Fund spent $97,500 to assist Hagan and criticize Louis G. Lyras of Campbell, who finished second in the primary. Lyras since has endorsed Ryan.
