Nursing homes see rise in COVID-19 deaths

Almost none of the nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties had any changes in the number of COVID-19 cases, the Ohio Department of Health reported in its weekly count Wednesday.

But deaths at long-term care facilities rose in each county, led by Columbiana County’s eight additional deaths.

The Columbiana County Health District reported Wednesday that the increase was because an unidentified nursing home or assisted-living facility did not report those eight deaths — which occurred between Aug. 26 and Sunday — to the Ohio Disease Reporting System until Wednesday.

Columbiana County continues to have the most COVID-19-infection cases with four facilities having the same high numbers as last week.

Mahoning County saw no change at the one facility with at least three cases — Park Vista nursing home of Youngstown.

Trumbull County saw one facility — Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge — rejoin the list of facilities with at least three cases after Trumbull County had no facilities with at least three cases last week.

Mahoning County reported an increase of six nursing home deaths this week — to 190. Trumbull County saw an increase of two nursing home deaths this week — to 75. And Columbiana County saw its increase of eight nursing home deaths — to 48 this week.

As a state, the number of patient cases this week in Ohio nursing homes and assisted-living facilities rose from 694 to 891. Staff cases rose from 448 to 510.

The number of inmate cases is low this week at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittburg with two. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown has none.
