For the third straight day, more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the state.

On Thursday, 1,166 new cases were reported.

Except for between Saturday and Monday as well as July 26, the state has reported more than 1,000 cases daily since July 8. Those 26 days are among the top 30 for the most reported cases in Ohio.

During the first five days of this week, 5,384 cases were reported, a daily average of 1,077. That’s lower than the previous four weeks when the state had its four highest weekly COVID-19 cases reported, but more than any other week since the start of the pandemic in mid-March.

The Ohio Department of Health on Thursday released its weekly Ohio Public Health Advisory System for the state’s 88 counties.

Columbiana County moved last week from Level 1 (yellow), where it’s been since the start of the system on July 2, to Level 2 (orange). But it dropped Thursday back to Level 1.

Trumbull County remained at Level 2 for the fourth straight week. It was at Level 3 (red) for the first two weeks of the system.

Mahoning stayed Thursday at Level 2, where it’s been since the start.

Having zero to one of seven indicators puts a county at Level 1, two to three at Level 2, four to five at Level 3 and six to seven at Level 4 (purple). But since the start of the system, no county has reached Level 4.

Trumbull and Mahoning each have the same two indicators: more than 50 cases per 100,000 residents for the past two weeks and more than 50 percent of its cases not in a congregate setting in any of the last three weeks.

Columbiana had only one indicator: more than 50 cases per 100,000 residents for the past two weeks.

But it leads the Valley with 106 cases per 100,000 residents. Mahoning is second with 80.9 cases per 100,000 with Trumbull having 60.11 cases per 100,000, according to ODH data.

The state reported 97,471 cases overall as of Thursday with 74,612 presumed recovered and 3,618 deaths, according to the ODH.

There were 979 Ohioans hospitalized with the virus Thursday. It’s the first time in about three weeks that number has dropped below 1,000.

Mahoning County reported 2,477 total cases Thursday with 1,905 presumed recovered and 254 deaths, including a new one Thursday.

Trumbull County listed 1,481 total cases Thursday with 1,140 presumed recovered and 105 deaths.

Columbiana County had 1,618 total cases Thursday with 1,411 presumed recovered and 60 deaths.

The Mahoning Valley has had four COVID-19 deaths reported this week as of Thursday. Since March 29, the lowest number of deaths for a full week for the area was July 12 with six. The most was 53 during the week of May 3.
