Campbell delays start of new school year by one week

CAMPBELL — Students in the Campbell City School District will start their new school year a week later than first planned.

School will now be in session beginning Aug. 31, and not the original Aug. 24 start date.

The decision was voted on during a special board of education meeting this week, and applies to students attending school as well as those choosing remote learning.

Additional training for staff is the reason for the calendar amendment, Superintendent Matt Bowen said Wednesday.

“We all received late information from the state concerning the restart plan for schools. We have worked tirelessly to create a five-day weekly plan for students’ face-to-face experience and additionally an option for full remote,” Bowen said.

The district also has seen an increase in enrollment, Bowen said, with students interested in the Northeast Ohio Impact Academy, along with families from elsewhere who chose open enrollment — all opting for a “face-to-face option.”

As the school year approaches, the district cannot yet share the exact influx number of students, as that number changes frequently, the superintendent said.

In addition, with the academy, students have their “home schools” while attending the STEM-based school, which is a five-day, in-person or remote class.

Students also could have opportunities to begin working on college courses, which may not be offered at their home districts, Bowen added.

He did say that over the last three years, Campbell schools either maintained or increased enrollment.

For students attending the traditional school setting, parents are asked to take their temperature prior to departing for school. If a sore throat, cough, digestion issues or fever of at least 100.4 are observed, the student is to stay home.

Staff will sanitize areas throughout the school day, and students will be distanced 6 feet apart.

Appropriate traffic flow within each school will be practiced, as will staggered start and end times.

Water bottles will be provided, as fountains will be shut off.

Lockers and cubbies will be assigned to students, around which students will not be allowed to congregate.

Information for remote learning at each of the district’s three schools can be found by visiting the district’s website,
