Second town hall meeting on police reform set for Tuesday

YOUNGSTOWN — The Next Steps Coalition working on police reform will have its second town hall meeting on “Policing in the Valley” at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The event will be at New Bethel Baptist Church. However, the format will be different than the first town hall in June.

Coalition members and area police chiefs will be there in person, but there will not be a live audience present. The event will be livestreamed on Facebook and another format. The web addresses still are being finalized, Jaladah Aslam, president of the Youngstown-Warren Black Caucus, said.

Individuals will be permitted to submit questions to the police officers online during the event, which will be 90 minutes long.

Nine police chiefs, an Ohio State Highway Patrol commander and the Mahoning County sheriff participated in the first town hall at New Bethel on June 23.

A panel of citizens posed questions and elicited responses from chiefs on racial profiling, use of deadly force, body cameras and binding citizen review boards.
