YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County traffic fatality case against Columbiana County Recorder Theresa Bosel is moving forward again, with another pretrial hearing tentatively scheduled for Aug. 28.

The assistant Mahoning County prosecutor in the case and Bosel’s attorney were scheduled to speak by phone Friday, and the result was the decision to schedule another pretrial hearing. She previously turned down a plea deal.

That phone call was the first activity since all court cases in Mahoning County, and everywhere else for that matter, were put on hold in mid March to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This resulted in Bosel’s jury trial scheduled for late March to be continued.

Bosel is charged with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly causing the Aug. 19, 2019 traffic accident that claimed the life of 69-year-old Cecil Chamberlain, who split time between his hometown of Salem and California, where he lived with his children.

She was driving on Western Reserve Road in Mahoning County at 11:15 a.m. when her Jeep Wrangler reportedly went left of center, striking a GMC Terrain operated by Drema Kessel of Salem. The Wrangler also struck a Ford Fusion driven by Chamberlain, who died from his injuries. His wife, Roberta, was treated at a nearby hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Bosel was not injured, nor was Kessel or her passenger, Felecia Dechon of Salem.

Bosel has pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor, and to additional charges of driving left of center and not wearing a seat belt. The charges carry a maximum possible sentence of three months in the county jail.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Chamberlain filed a civil suit against Bosel in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court seeking $50,000-plus in damages.
