Man pleads not guilty to five robberies

YOUNGSTOWN — Terron L. Jones, 21, of Taylor Street and Fairmount Avenue, was arraigned Tuesday on charges accusing him of committing five armed robberies of Youngstown and Boardman businesses May 16 through June 1.

He pleaded not guilty, and Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court did not change his $60,000 bond. Jones remains in the Mahoning County jail.

Jones committed many of the crimes while wearing an Ohio University Bobcats sweatshirt, according to police reports.

The Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force arrested Jones at an apartment on Griffith Street June 2 on warrants issued May 29 for three of the robberies. By then, he had also committed a fifth robbery, according to his July 1 indictments.

He is alleged to have robbed an unspecified Rite Aid store May 16; the Boardman Speedway, 649 E. Midlothian Blvd., May 22; the Youngstown Check-n-Go, 1739 Wilson Ave., May 23; the Youngstown Circle K, 1821 Mahoning Ave., May 29; and the Youngstown Dollar General, 1370 Belmont Ave., June 1.

Each charge carries a specification that he used a handgun in the robbery. And he is charged with possessing a firearm in the robberies. He was not allowed to possess a firearm because of being convicted of felony assault in January 2018, his indictments state.

He also is charged with felonious assault in the Check-n-Go robbery for having engaged in a gunfight with an employee during that robbery, prosecutors say.

A police report regarding the Check-n-Go robbery states that a store employee gave Jones cash but then ducked behind the counter, got his gun, and the two exchanged gunfire. No one apparently was injured, and Jones ran.

If convicted of all charges, Jones could get well more than 50 years in prison.

Jones was sentenced to six months in the county jail in January 2019 after being convicted of an assault. At the time, he was homeless.
