Hubbard BOE extends union contracts

HUBBARD — The Hubbard Exempted Village Board of Education has approved a one-year extension of the district’s certified and classified union contracts through the 2020-21 school year.

The board at its June meeting approved a one-year collective bargaining agreement with the Hubbard Education Association effective July 1 through June 30, 2021, which was previously ratified by the association on June 11. The association represents the district’s 124 teachers.

The board also approved the one-year collective bargaining agreement with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 4 effective June 30 through June 29, 2021, which was previously ratified by OAPSE on June 16. The union represents 70 cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, secretaries and maintenance.

Hubbard Superintendent Raymond Soloman said the administration could not be more proud of both the teacher association and nonteachers union with regard to negotiating a one-year extension of both collective bargaining agreements,

“With the hardships endured last year during school closures and the challenges we face to safely reopen school this year, both our teachers and non-teachers came together to work in the best interest of our students, staff and Hubbard community. Recognizing the uncertainties surrounding next school year, including state funding, our 124 teachers and 70 non-teachers focused strictly on students and the operational needs of the district during the negotiations process,” Soloman said.

He said the teachers association agreed not to increase base salaries but instead only advance on steps built into the teacher’s salary schedule, and nonteachers received a base increase of 2 percent given the reduced and minimal amount of built-in steps.

Soloman said the total cost of the one-year extension for teachers is $132,500 and for non-teachers is $41,300.
