Gas leak shuts down Route 224 in Poland Village

POLAND — Four apartment complexes on U.S. Route 224 were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a utility company struck a gas line across from the Poland post office while drilling.

Just after 3 p.m., the compromised gas line was discovered by workers from Utillity Solutions, which is drilling to install a utility line that will stretch mutiple states, an employee with the company said at the scene. Traffic was closed in both directions, with members of the Boardman Fire Department directing traffic to go behind the Poland United Methodist Church.

The drilling was being completed on Pennsylvania Avenue and Route 224 in the Boardman-Poland area, just east of Interstate 680.

Boardman Fire Capt. Jim Hoover said Dominion East Ohio arrived to repair the line. The gas was shut off at 6:05 p.m. by Dominion and the road reopened at 6:30 p.m. Hoover said the gas was still off after 9 p.m. as repairs were being done.
