YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown City School District, continuing to announce administrative changes, has named a new business manager.

School district CEO Justin Jennings has tapped veteran city schools educator Mike Sernulka for the job.

Sernulka has worked in the school district for 32 years, the last three as assistant principal at Kirkmere Elementary School. He also worked as a classroom teacher at the former Princeton Junior High and Sheridan and Bennett Elementary schools; and a math coach at the former John White, Cleveland and West schools and at Williamson Elementary.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my district in this capacity,” Sernulka said. “My work will be grounded in the goals and objectives of the YCSD Strategic Plan, which are to create a culture of shared accountability, ensure safe facilities and operate with fiscal responsibility. I look forward to working with people who share these same goals and will work diligently to ensure that the mission of the business office is realized.”

He will be taking over duties of Anthony DeNiro, who died in April. DeNiro served the district for more than 50 years as a teacher, principal, business manager and deputy chief of operations.

“We all miss Tony, and obviously we can never replace him,” Jennings said. “But Mike’s skills and expertise combined with his knowledge of the district mean he’ll be able to make the position his own and serve YCSD well.”

Sernulka begins his new role Aug. 1.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education and his master’s in educational administration, both from Youngstown State University. He also has a pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade math endorsement from The Ohio State University and is licensed by the state as an elementary school principal and a school business manager.
