Man arrested in armed robberies

YOUNGSTOWN — Terron L. Jones, 21, of Taylor Street and Fairmont Avenue, was arrested Tuesday at an apartment on Griffith Street on warrants charging him with three armed robberies.

One of the three was May 23 when a man about 6 feet tall and thin in his 20s robbed the Check-n-Go store, 1739 Wilson Ave., while wearing an Ohio Bobcats sweatshirt.

He got cash, but a store employee ducked behind the register, got his gun, and the two exchanged gunfire. No one apparently was injured.

He also is charged in a May 22 armed robbery at the Speedway, 649 E. Midlothian Blvd., in Boardman, in which a man held employees at gunpoint and got money from the cash registers.

And, he is charged in a Friday Youngstown robbery, according to court records, but no information is available on that robbery.

Jones was booked into the Mahoning County jail Tuesday but does not have arraignment hearing dates on the Youngstown charges. He is due in Boardman Area Court today for arraignment on the Boardman charge.

The Northern Ohio Fugitive Task Force arrested Jones on Tuesday on warrants issued May 29 for the three crimes. Task force members learned Jones was at the Griffith Street apartment and arrested him without incident.

Officers had a search warrant for the Griffith Street residence and secured evidence, a Youngstown police report states.

It is possible that Jones is a suspect in two other armed robberies that occurred Monday and Tuesday in the city in which a man also wore a Bobcats sweatshirt.

At 3:12 p.m. Monday, police said a man in his early 20s wearing a gray Bobcats hooded sweatshirt robbed the Dollar General store, 1370 Belmont Ave. He was thin, held a gun and got cash from the store, then fled, police said.

About 10 minutes after midnight Tuesday, police responded to the Circle K store, 1821 Mahoning Ave., for an armed robbery and learned that a man wearing a gray Ohio Bobcats sweatshirt robbed the store.

First, he asked for an alcoholic beverage the store did not carry. When he was told it wasn’t available, he left.

Then he returned a few minutes later and asked for a different beverage the store did not have. Then he walked around inside, a police report states.

Finally he followed a store employee until the employee heard another employee scream and realized the man was holding a gun at her back.

Both employees opened their cash drawers and gave him the money, and he fled from the store.
