Virus death toll continues to slow in Valley

The number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio through Sunday neared 28,000, according to the state, which also reported 15 new deaths.

The Ohio Department of Health reported 27,923 novel coronavirus cases in the state. That’s an increase of 449 cases since Saturday. The number of deaths rose to 1,625.

Hospitalizations are nearing 5,000 with Sunday’s number reported at 4,921, an increase of 51 over Saturday. There also have been 1,305 ICU admissions.

Locally, Mahoning County continues to have the most cases with 1,212. There have been 275 hospitalizations and 146 deaths. The county reported 13 more cases and four new hospitalizations since Saturday’s totals.

Trumbull and Columbiana counties have significantly fewer cases than Mahoning.

Trumbull County reported 450 cases along with 138 hospitalizations and 39 deaths. On Sunday, the Trumbull County Health District reported of the positive cases, 182 patients were male and 268 were female. Ages range between 1 and 101. Trumbull County has 34 people in quarantine and are being monitored, while 373 people have completed quarantine. Warren has released 67 patients from quarantine.

Columbiana County has 420 cases, 125 hospitalizations and 43 deaths. Many of the Columbiana County cases are out of the Elkton federal prison, as 115 inmates and 12 staff members have tested positive for the virus.

New case numbers in Trumbull and Columbiana counties also were lower than Mahoning, with Trumbull adding three cases and Columbiana adding five. None of the three counties reported a new death on Sunday.
