WHAT: Township trustees, special Friday meeting

PRESENT: Arnie Clebone, Greg Cizmar and Devon Stanley

Trustees:

• Determined that the owner’s maintenance of vegetation, garbage, refuse and other debris upon the following properties constitutes a nuisance: 4604 Truman, 4727 Fifth, 1714 Churchill, 3523 Belmont, 3807 Belmont, 55 Norwick, 3737 Logan Gate, 569 NorthLawn, 129 Catherine, 391 Goldie, 3470 Hadley, 196 Mansell, 195 Mansell, 900 Royal Arms, 5687 Lamplighter, 4710 Crews Hood, 811 Mansell, 475 Seacrist and 985 Colonial. A notice of the board’s intent to provide for the abatement, control or removal of the debris was given to these property owners. If they fail to abate the nuisance within seven days, the trustees provide for the abatement, control or removal of vegetation, garbage, refuse or other debris constituting a nuisance;

• Accepted the resignation of part time firefighter / paramedic Zachary Holmes, effective June 5. He was hired full-time at another fire department;

• Interim police Chief Toby Meloro announced that the police department received a grant for a $4,000 ballistic shield for training purposes as well as for a $1,000 bite suit.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: Calvin Jones, Christopher Brookbank, Scott Davis, Diana DeVito and David Malone

The board:

• Granted one-year limited contracts to 40 licensed teaching personnel effective July 1 through June 30, 2021;

• Accepted the resignations of Julie Reese, school nurse; Donald Cheffo, high school principal; and Angeline Sturgeon, teacher;

• Granted two-year administrative contracts to Michael Butch, assistant principal and positive behavior support leader; and Michael Palmer, junior high school principal, effective July 1 through June 30,2022;

• Granted two-year administrative contracts to Akesha Joseph, lead high school principal and Andrew Scarmack, middle school principal, effective Aug. 1 through June 30, 2022;

• Approved the reduction in force and the suspension of the limited contract for Tyler Rubesich, intervention specialist for the 2020-21 school year effective July 1;

• Voted to not renew seven mentor contracts for the 2020-21 school year;

• Approved the reduction of force, due to lack of funds, for Jason Curall, transportation supervisor;

• Granted continuing contracts for Victoria McBride, cook; and Kim Toth, guidance secretary, and seven intervention assistants;

• Granted two-year, limited contracts to 14 classified nonteaching personnel;

• Approved the reduction in force and the suspension of limited contracts for 14 classified nonteaching personnel;

• Voted to not renew supplemental contracts for 103 positions for the 2020-21 school year and grant approval to seek qualified classified personnel for the positions if licensed employees and qualified certificated non-employees are not available;

• Voted to not renew Deborah Aiken’s long-term substitute teaching contract;

• Set the next regular board of education meeting at 5 p.m. June 29.

The board:

• Approved three locally defined graduation diploma seals that include student engagement seal, community service seal, and fine and performing arts seal to be used beginning with the Class of 2021. Students and their families will be informed of the criteria to earn the locally defined seal that may be awarded in addition to the state-defined diploma seals. The state has approved 12 seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, military and self-sustaining professions. Earned seals will be placed on students’ diplomas and official transcripts;

• Accepted resignations of teacher Angeline Sturgeon, middle school guidance counselor Wanda Clark and mentor Carol Reapsummer;

• Accepted $6,700 in donations for the school’s food pantry, $5,000 in donations for computers and internet services for students, and $660 in donations for new track uniforms;

• Discussed payment of spring supplemental contracts to spring sports coaches who would be paid 25 percent of their pay since spring sports had not really started before the coronavirus outbreak;

• Rescheduled the next meeting to 5:30 p.m. May 18 because of Memorial Day.
