Judge refuses to lower Canfield man’s bond

YOUNGSTOWN — A judge has refused to modify bond to allow a Canfield man charged with hitting a sanitation worker during a crash in November to leave the Mahoning County jail.

The attorney for Brandon Ferrier, 23, asked Judge Anthony Donofrio of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court last month to lower Ferrier’s bond so he could be released to his mother on electronic house arrest. The filing says the reason is because of injuries to Ferrier’s feet, but it doesn’t say why that should reduce his bond.

Ferrier, of Stoneybrook Lane, is under indictment on charges of vehicular assault, failure to comply with the orders of a police officer, receiving stolen property and misuse of a credit card because of the crash, which was in Austintown, and other matters.

Police said Ferrier was fleeing from a traffic stop attempted by a Mahoning County sheriff’s deputy when Ferrier passed the garbage truck and hit the worker on Allendale Avenue. The worker was outside of the truck.

The worker was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in critical condition.

Ferrier then continued to flee, crashing a second time hours later in the New Philadelphia area and being arrested. He had to be cut out of his vehicle in the second crash and was taken to the hospital.

At the time, Ferrier also was wanted by Mill Creek MetroParks police for fleeing a traffic stop and was wanted in Butler, Pa., for warrants on bad check and fraud charges.

Attorney Mark Lavelle told Donofrio that Ferrier “has a medical condition which makes him a hardship case for purposes of incarceration in the Mahoning County jail.”

Ferrier was injured in the Mahoning County crash, the filing says. Ferrier has nerve damage in his feet that cuts off his circulation, the filing adds.
