WHAT: Board of Education Wednesday

PRESENT: President Don Sherwood, Kathy Mock, Harold Porter, Robin Krempasky, Kim Smrek, Superintendent David Cappuzzello, Treasurer Blaise Karlovic

The Board:

* Approved an agreement with Julian & Grube Inc. for the fiscal year 2020 – 2021 Medicaid school program, effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021;

* Approved a $2,332.75 agreement with Supplemental Educational Services Inc., for Title I services at All Children Learn Differently, effective July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020, and approved a $4,395.81 agreement for the same services at St. Christine School, effective for the same dates;

* Approved the following resignations: Beth Kennedy, transportation; Jaden Karr, sweeper cleaner; Cody Donaldson, sweeper cleaner and Michelle Mercer, FPO tutor;

* Approved Jeannine Andrews transferring from a nine-month, 5.75 hour special education paraprofessional to a 10-month elementary school secretary; Krystal Clemmens from a nine-month, 5.75 hour bus aide to 9 month, 5.75 hour program specific paraprofessional; and Faith Wilson from a nine-month, 5.75 hour sweeper cleaner at AES to the same position at AIS;

* Appointed John Burd and Bruce Spicher as paid Austintown Middle School Head football coaches and Dominic Aliberti as assistant coach for boys tennis at Fitch;

* Appointed Rich Raymer as a volunteer girls softball coach;

* Appointed bus aides Michael Puhalla, Justin Tovtin and Gary Slatinsky and sweeper cleaner Jaden Karr;

* Approved unpaid leave requests for Darlene Wiery, Linda Kurfis, Vonda Delauder, Karen Carrol and Stacie Zoccali;

* Approved the Falcon Skill Softball Camp for 9 to 11 a.m., March 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2020 in the Fitch gym. Cost will be $45 per player, $70 for two players or $85 for three players. Extra lifting and hitting sessions for seventh and eighth graders will be 6 to 8 p.m. March 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2020 in the fitness center;

* Approved a facilitated resolution to a complaint. A resident asked the district to upgrade the softball field so it would be as nice as the baseball field. The softball field will be moved from its location across the street to the space next to the current baseball field, according to board President Don Sherwood. The new softball field will have turf and will share concessions with the baseball field, he said. Phase one of the project is expected to be complete by the start of the 2020 softball season, with phase two set for completion in 2022. Sherwood said the cost of the project is minimal as the turf is already in place;

* Approved a memorandum of understanding recognizing medical assistants as a position in Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 194;

* Approved participation in Stark State College’s college credit plus program to provide high school students the opportunity to be enrolled in college-level courses, effective for the 2020 – 2021 school year;

* Approved an agreement with Kent State University to provide academic opportunities for KSU Community Health Nursing students at Austintown schools;

* Approved agreements with ACCESS for internet access services and application services for fiscal year 2021;

* Approved an agreement with Easterseals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties for contracting interpreting services as needed in the district, effective Feb. 11, 2020, to December 31, 2020;

* Approved soliciting for bids for diary products, bakery goods and pizza for the child nutrition program for the 2020 – 2021 school year. Bids are to be available to suppliers in March and awards determined in April 2020;

* Accepted the following donations to the district: $295 from Jack and Vickie Kidd for the Purple Star Room at Fitch, $25 from Ken Jakubec for police and fire department flags at Fitch High School, and $500 from Protech Electrical Contracting for the athletic department;

* Set the next board meeting for Wednesday, March 18;

* Approved the school district Calendar for the 2020 – 2021 school year.

Liberty

WHAT: Liberty Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: Calvin Jones, Chris Brookbank, David Malone, Diana DeVito and Scott Davis

Board members:

* Approved the 2020-2021 course catelog;

* Approved the College Credit Plus agreement with Eastern Gateway Community College and Youngstown State University;

* Approved to administer the third grade language arts and math state assessments using a pen and paper format;

* Approved five sick days for Christine Blount;

* Hired Wafa Hadi as an intervention specialist;

* Approved supplemental contracts for Brett Fine, Michael Orr and Terri Long as varsity softball coaches;

* Approved Megan Keown and Benjamin Mowrer as new volunteers for the drama club;

* Approved to hold off on changing the kindergarten enrollment policy until next year;

* Will hold a public forum to discuss the new school levy at 7 p.m. March 9 in the high school auditorium.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: William Cummings, Amanda O’Neill, Donald Newell and Rocky Adams

ABSENT: Tony Pantone

Board members:

* Recognized students Daniella Hosack, Jackie Adler, Taylor Perline, Abigail Schindell and Dominic Panozzo for excellence in school;

* Approved a contract with Northeast Ohio Management Information Network for internet access;

* Approved Shawn Marcello, high school principal and Traci Liptak, middle school assistant principal, to coordinate the after-school intervention programs. The list of teachers was also approved;

* Approved the memorandum of understanding between the district and Eastern Gateway Community College and Youngstown State University;

* Hired Shannon Street and Debbie Ridel as home instruction tutors at $30/hour. Street will work with high school students for up to one hour per week. Ridel will with high school students and 7th grade students for up to four hours per week;

* Accepted the resignations of Matt Jones, throwing coach and Joseph Maldonado, IT technician;

* Approved for Robin Vaupel to facilitate the spring book study;

* Hired Greg Powell, Emma Dellinger, Tiffany Ditman and Aaron Wirtz as athletic coaches;

* Approved the 2020-2021 calendar;

* Approved the list of prospective graduates;

* Approved Tiffany Bendersky’s unpaid leave of absence.
