Police surprised to find arrested woman shot

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown police made a surprising discovery Monday when they took custody of a woman on warrants: She had a gunshot wound that had occurred the previous day.

Youngstown police went to the intersection of Tippecanoe and Canfield roads to take custody of Xiomara C. Acosta, 27, of Dogwood Lane from Canfield police. Acosta had a warrant for a Youngstown hit-skip accident from March 2019.

While taking Acosta to the Mahoning County Adult Justice Center, a Youngstown officer learned Acosta had a gunshot wound from the day before and he needed to take her to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, which he did.

Another Youngstown officer helped interpret for Acosta, who does not speak English well. Acosta told the officer she did not call police after being shot. Officers later retrieved her from the hospital and took her to jail.

Sgt. John Wells with Canfield police said that Acosta did not indicate she had an injury. “This was a surprise to us,” he said.

“There was a language barrier,” Wells said. A passenger in the vehicle was translating, and also never indicated Acosta was injured.

Typically, it’s not common practice to look over a suspect before taking them into custody, Canfield police Chief Chuck Colucci said.

Wells said Youngstown police contacted Canfield, inquiring to see if there was any knowledge or information regarding Acosta’s injury.

“She never indicated she had an injury,” Wells said, adding Acosta “had no visible wounds,” as she was fully clothed. She also did not appear to walk with a limp, he added. “She wasn’t hunched over like she was in pain.”

Once Wells was contacted about the incident, he reached out to patrol officers on site. He also reviewed footage from the patrol car, further stating there was no mention or visible indication of a bullet wound from Acosta.

Acosta is being held without bond.
