Man sentenced for assault on Youngstown police officer

YOUNGSTOWN — Cavante K. Tabb, 20, was sentenced to four to six years in prison for assaulting a police officer and other crimes at a home on Terrell Avenue on Oct. 7, 2019.

Tabb pleaded guilty Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to aggravated robbery, assault and domestic violence in an incident in which he tried to grab a police officer’s gun during a struggle. The officer was able to fend off Tabb, who was then arrested.

The officer had gone to Tyrell Avenue for a domestic dispute and found Tabb begging a female not to press charges. The woman said Tabb had come to her apartment and assaulted her.

Tabb tried to attack the victim, so an officer tackled him. But Tabb resisted and tried to grab the officer’s gun. The officer threw several elbow strikes at Tabb and got him to release his grip on the gun.

Several people began to gather in the hallway, so the victim slammed her apartment door shut, keeping the others outside of the apartment, a police report ssid.

When a second officer arrived, he rushed through a group of about five people in the hallway, including one making threats against police.

The second officer helped the first officer take Tabb into custody. The verbal abuse from the people in the hallway continued until additional officers arrived, the report said. No additional arrests were made.
