Dedication at Fitch today for chair of honor for POWs, MIAs

AUSTINTOWN — There will be a little less available seating today in the Fitch gymnasium bleachers.

A space has been set aside for a “chair of honor” to remember prisoners of war who never made it home and soldiers missing in action.

The special black chair was designed by Fitch graphic arts students. The chair had to have shorter rear legs to be able to cover two levels of bleachers.

A white chain is placed on poles that surround the chair. The MIA-POW design was placed on the chair along with the number of missing veterans..

“It was made to be put up and taken down quickly and easily so the bleachers could be moved in and out,” said Sam Swoger, past commander of American Legion Post 301.

During a pre-game ceremony today, military appreciation will be observed and the chair officially dedicated. Veterans attending the game can get in free, and the American Legion shall post the colors for the evening.

“We are very military here at Fitch,” said Jim Penk, athletic director. “We enjoy doing things for those who are looking out for us.”

The chair of honor is a program that is spreading across the nation. Each year more and more schools join in the effort, but at Fitch, it was the graphic arts department and maintenance crew that made sure the indoor chair was ready in time.

“In September, Post 301 will be placing a chair of honor on the home side of the football stadium,” said Tom Moss, second vice commander of Post 301. He said the outdoor chair will be a permanent one, and would be dedicated in much the same manner as the indoor chair.
