HOLIDAY SHOPPING: The Shop in the Gardens at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., will host its annual Holiday Open House 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 and noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 10.
Shoppers will receive a 20 percent discount on all Christmas and Thanksgiving merchandise. The shop will be decorated for holiday.
The Shop in the Gardens is operated by Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens, a nonprofit organization independent from Mill Creek MetroParks that exists to support Fellows Riverside Gardens. All proceeds from the shop benefit Fellows Riverside Gardens and its related programs.
Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens members will have the opportunity to attend a preview party and sale 5:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7. Memberships may be purchased at the door.

STUDENTS HELP: Students from the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s Key Club volunteered their time last week helping with landscaping and cleaning up at their North Lima facility. More than 25 students spent the day picking up leaves, power washing benches and weeding their prayer area to get it ready for the winter. The teachers in charge of the club, Alyssa Liste and Michelle Lanterman, hope to make this a yearly project.

GATHERING IN SOLIDARITY: A special interfaith gathering of solidarity in remembrance of the synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh will be held 11 a.m. to noon Sunday at Congregation Rodef Sholom in Youngstown, which will commemorate one year since the tragedy at the Tree of Life Synagogue.
In solidarity with the Pittsburgh Jewish community and Congregation Rodef Sholom, members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown will hold their own regular Sunday morning worship service in the sanctuary, led by Pastor Joseph Boyd, spiritual leader of UUYO. Both Pastor Joseph Boyd and Rabbi Frank Muller will speak. The public is invited.
In remembrance of the 11 people whose lives were lost on that day, Rodef Sholom will leave all lights on throughout the night Sunday.

100 YEARS OF CONSERVATION: The Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley will hold “100 Years of Conservation: A Brief Overview of Ohio’s Park Districts” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Canfield Library. Mill Creek Park achieved the status as Ohio’s First Park District (1891). The township park district converted to a Metropolitan Park district, or MetroPark. Speaker Steve Madewell, who has been the director of three Ohio Park systems — Geauga Park District, Lake MetroParks, and Toledo MetroParks — will discuss the rich history and what is in store for the future of Ohio’s regional / metropolitan park districts. TRICK NOR TREAT EVENT: The eighth annual Trick Nor Treat Halloween candy-free event will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Beyond Expectations South Bridge Therapy and Learning Center, 725 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman. The non-food trick or treating is inclusive for children with food allergies, special diets or whose parents do not want them to have sugar. Inside will be a special sensory trick or treat for those children with special needs. Simply Powered Yoga is hosting an accommodated sensory yoga session inside. All volunteers inside will be dressed up in nonscary costumes. There is a wheelchair tunnel donated by Legacy Visiting Health Services.
Outside, there will be more than 40 business, nonprofit organizations, families with vehicles decorated and passing out candy and noncandy items for those with food allergies and special needs.

This year, more than 700 national service volunteers impacted the lives of 2,000 people in the Valley, served 80,000 hours and saved partner schools and nonprofits more than $1.2 million dollars. WOMEN’S CLUBS PARTICIPATE: Ohio General Federation of Women’s Clubs across the state recently participated in a tribute to Gold Star Mothers at the Mohican Memorial Forest and Shrine in Loudonville. The memorial service recognizes American Gold Star Mothers and families whose sons and daughters served and died while in service to our country. Remarks during the ceremony were offered by Chaplain Jim Locke III of the Ohio Army National Guard, Major General Deborah Ashenhurst ( U.S. Army retired ) as well as GFWC member and Memorial Shrine trustee Rose Logston.
GFWC Ohio President Linda Crish led a procession to lay the memorial wreath. This tribute and service takes place every year on the last Sunday in September and is open to the public. Photos of this event can be found on the GFWC Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs page on Facebook.
SOCIETY WELCOMES REES: The Boardman Historical Society meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boardman Library. The speaker will be Regina Rees, retired YSU professor and professional storyteller, who will speak on “Tales of Youngstown.”

NIGHT AT TARGET: The Boardman Lions Club will hold its 11th annual New Coats for Kids Program 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Target in Boardman. Applications went home with all Boardman elementary school students and are evaluated by a committee. Selection is based on the information provided.
Coats are purchased for those families in greatest need first and then for those throughout the list until the club’s budget is spent.
Qualified applicants were notified by mail and invited to a night at Target to select their coats. After shopping, the family is given a snack provided by Target. Lions members serve as personal shoppers.
Over 10 years, 455 families have received 941 coats at at total cost of $42,825. The club already has started raising funds for next year. To donate, visit www.boardmanlions.com.
OSTOMY SUPPORT: The Youngstown area ostomy support group will meet 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St., Boardman. This is a nonprofit, self-help support group, and family and friends are welcome to attend. Guest speakers will be Dr. Ricchiuti of the Urology Associates and Dr. Huang, a trauma / general surgeon.

APPLE FEST: Woodworth Church, 30 E. Western Reserve Road, will hold its annual Apple Butter Festival 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. See how apple butter is made the old-fashioned way. WALK AGAINST BULLYING: The fourth annual Lauren Nicole Bowman Step Out Against Bullying Walk will take place 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Austintown Township Park, 6000 Kirk Road, Austintown. The walk is held by Lauren’s family and friends; not only in memory of her passing as a result of bullying, but with the hope of bringing awareness of the issue, to let others that may be being bullied know there are people who care and places to contact. NUN RUN: The Nun Run 2019 will take off Saturday at The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road in Canfield. The Kids Run for those 10 and under begins at 8:15 a.m.; the 1-mile walk will start at 8:30 a.m.; and the 5K race begins at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20 if received by Friday, and $25 the day of the race. No entry fee for the Kids’ Run.
