LIBERTY– Today and Thursday, Liberty students will learn about Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine shooting, and about how to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.

Today the students at Blott Guy PK-6 school will learn about Rachel’s story through age-appropriate programming and be challenged to use kind words and do kind things, as well as accept and include others.

Students in grades K-3 will participate in the Link Up! presentation and grades 4-6 will participate in the Rachel’s Story presentation, which introduces them to Scott and her challenge to reach out to others with deliberate acts of kindness. Students will not hear or see footage related to the Columbine tragedy or her death.

On Thursday, students in grades 7-12 will participate in the Rachel’s Challenge presentation, which shares the inspiring story of Scott, whose example of kindness and acceptance was brought to light when she became the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy. They will be challenged to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion in an effort to make Liberty schools and the community safer, more connected places where bullying and violence are replaced with kindness and respect.

At 6:30 p.m. Thursday, the school district will further explain Rachel’s Challenge to families. The assembly will take place in the high school auditorium. Due to the nature of the discussions, it is recommended that parents only bring children who are 13 and older.

After these presentations, students will be challenged to:

• Look for the best in others.

• Dream big and believe in yourself.

• Use kind words and do kind things.

• Accept and include others.
