YSU to speak to FAA about low-flying plane

YOUNGSTOWN — A small plane that was flying very low over Stambaugh Stadium during the Youngstown State University football game Saturday afternoon will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

YSU officials have been in contact with the FAA and plan to speak further with the agency today, Ron Cole, communications director for YSU, said Sunday.

Cole said although he didn’t attend the game, he was told many people showed concern.

“I understand the plane was noticeably low and did cause some concerns from people seated in the stands” during the Penguins’ game against Robert Morris, Cole said.

Reports indicate the small plane was circling the stadium several times at low altitudes near the press box and stadium lights.

“We will be asking them what happened, why it happened and if any action should be taken. We will let them handle and lead the investigation and decide what options they have to address this,” Cole said.

The YSU Police Department was contacted Saturday about the plane and handled the initial investigation. A spokesman for the department also said Sunday the matter is being addressed further today with the FAA.

No information was available on how many people were inside the plane, or its ownership.

The FAA handles investigations involving aircraft.
