YOUNGSTOWN — A Youngstown man who told police he was a youth football coach was arraigned Tuesday on a federal charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felony.

Randy Triplett, 31, of Berkley Avenue, appeared before U.S. Judge David A. Ruiz of Northern Ohio District Court who accepted his not guilty plea and set bond at $20,000, which the defendant posted. A trial in the case is set for Oct. 17 while the final pretrial hearing is set for Oct. 6.

Triplett was arrested July 2, 2022, in Liberty Township. He didnát identify himself because he said he was a youth football coach, and then township police found a Taurus Model G2C 9mm firearm.

At the time, Triplett was riding a motorcycle. After telling police he didnát have any weapons, authorities found the firearm in a motorcycle compartment, the report states. He faced charges in Girard Municipal Court where he posted a $40,000 bond, court records states.

After being charged in the federal case, Triplett was arrested Monday by federal marshals and taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Court records show that he was convicted in U.S. District Court on May 5, 2015, of a federal conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin. He also was convicted of tampering with evidence on Feb. 7, 2013, in Trumbull County Common Pleas court.

If found guilty of the charge, Triplett has to forfeit the firearm, the court document states.
