Wed. 10:40 a.m.: Charges against pilot set for Nov. 2 trial

YOUNGSTOWN — The misdemeanor criminal case of New Middletown man Christopher Wilkinson, accused of flying too low over Stambaugh Stadium in 2019, is now set for trial Nov. 2.

Judge Carla Baldwin of Youngstown Municipal Court was set to have a hearing June 2 on Wilkinsonás motion to suppress certain evidence from the case, but Wilkinson withdrew the motion.

The case was later set for trial for Aug. 3, but on Monday it was moved to 8:30 a.m. Nov. 2.

Wilkinson, 33, of Youngstown Pittsburgh Road, is charged with misdemeanor unsafe operation of an aircraft, inducing panic and disorderly conduct in the Sept. 28, 2019, incident.

In May 2021, the judge denied a motion to dismiss the charges, citing case law that gives the states authority over such matters.

The Youngstown State University Police Department investigated the matter and filed charges against Wilkinson, accusing him of flying his single-engine Cessna close to the press box and stadium lights during the game. Reports stated the plane was circling the stadium several times at low altitudes.

The city law director’s office has argued that Wilkinson flew well below 1,000 feet in elevation in an area not regulated by the federal government.
