Art and alumni spirit unite in ‘Spartan Fever’ donation to Boardman High School
BOARDMAN — Artist Kirsten Swanson Bowen, a 1985 graduate of Boardman High School, has donated a painting titled “Spartan Fever” to her alma mater.
The work, created in Venetian plaster on canvas as part of her text-based series, features the Boardman Spartan mascot with the lyrics of the school fight song embedded within the texture.
Bowen, a well-known artist whose work has been exhibited nationally, created the 60″ x 40″ piece as part of the Class of 1985 reunion celebration.
Her former classmate, Jolene Santarelli of New Middletown, purchased the artwork and then donated it back to Boardman High School.
The painting now hangs in the entryway of the Boardman Performing Arts Center, where it will be seen by students, staff, alumni and visitors.
The purchase also served as a benefit for the Boardman Alumni Association, with a portion of the proceeds supporting alumni programs and initiatives.
