Local pianists earn honors at state level

Mahoning Valley young pianists competed successfully at the Ohio Federation Competition held Oct. 16 at Church of the Messiah in Westerville.

Each student had to perform at the local level and then at district level while also keeping a superior rating for five years. Their monetary awards were from The Ohio Federation of Music Club Foundation.

These students are all from the junior class 1B Youngstown -Warren area:

• Elizabeth Gerber competition is for students younger than seventh grade. Avnish Pai Dhungat of Canfield earned first place, $150; Christopher Solvesky of Boardman, third place, $50;

• Marilyn Walter competition is for seventh through ninth grade. Nathanael Warner of Canfield took third place, $135;

• Charlotte and W. Alfred Gray competition is for 10th- 12th-graders. Honorable mention went to Simon Kovass of Canfield and Gabbi Smallwood of Canfield.

Due to the pandemic the state competition for 2020 was held in Warren on May 22, 2021, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

• In the Elizabeth Gerber competition students Dhungat and Mazin Atway of Canfield received honorable mention. In the Charlotte and Alfred Gray competition, second place went to Gabbi Smallwood who received $200.
