‘Bloomin’ Arts’ set for Saturday

The Seeing Eye

VIRTUAL STREETSCAPE: Youngstown CityScape’s 23rd annual Streetscape will be a virtual event this year. Streetscape’s “Bloomin’ Arts 2020” will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

This spring, CityScape focused on flattening the curve by having downtown’s green spaces professionally planted. Now they’re encouraging volunteers and supporters in the city and across the region to be part of the day’s fun by beautifying their yard or neighborhood green space on Saturday. Head for your garden, take a selfie, share it to CityScape’s FaceBook page, or Instagram.

“We’ve unrolled Streetscape’s ‘Bloomin’ Arts 2020′ over the course of the last several weeks and our big day is May 30,” said Sharon Letson, CityScape executive director. “Things are a little different this year, but we still wanted to reach out to our supporters, volunteers, and downtown businesses, and get downtown looking lovely for the start of summer.”

CityScape has mailed hundreds of commemorative “Bloomin’ Arts” T-shirts to bring people together, and celebrate the Butler Institute of Art’s centennial with PNC Bank’s support of the “Art in the Garden” project.

Westside Bowl will offer regular cheese pizzas for $5 with call-ahead orders for pick-up between noon and 3 p.m. with a Streetscape Day registration.

Youngstown CityScape is a non-profit community development organization dedicated to the revitalization of the greater downtown Youngstown area.

HEART BALL RAISES $200,000: The American Heart Association’s first Virtual Tri-County Heart Ball raised more than $200,000 to help fight heart disease and stroke in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

The event brought Vegas to more than 200 Tri-County homes, with overall attendance topping 500.

The virtual event, held on May 21, paid tribute to late American Heart Association team member Nick McGahagan, who passed away in March. He accepted a development director position with the American Heart Association in his hometown of Youngstown last May.

A video highlighted the area’s heart children since 1968. The 2020 Heart Hero, Wesley Franklin, and his parents, Will and Jessica, shared their story.
