Helping those in need during outbreak

Area churches and religious organizations are doing what they can to reach out and help others in need since the coronavirus outbreak.

Pastor Robert Quarantine of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman said the church has a blanket-making group that decided during the current situation they would switch from making blankets to masks.

“While they usually can get together when making blankets, they are all working at their homes making masks, Although the may be separate, they are working together as a group to help make the masks,” he said.

Kaye Gwinn of Seeking God’s Glory, is holding a clothing giveaway — with hats, mittens and gloves — at noon today in the Smart Mart parking lot, 2142 Youngstown Road SE, Warren.

“This will be the last Saturday there will be food and clothing items given away. We prayed about this and decided to go out and help people with all they are going through,” Gwinn said.

The organizers have taken precautions to keep people far apart. There will be carryouts only with volunteers handing food and clothing to people in their cars.

Warren resident Jolene Burchett has brought her children to past clothing giveaways.

“It’s a great thing to get the gloves, hats and other things we need,” she said, assisting her children in selecting items.

Clothing is not the only item being given out to help people.

Kathie Trowbridge said many members of the Warren First Presbyterian Church including the First Church Kids got together earlier this month to put together 70 bags of free lunches and grocery food bags with more than 25 people picking up items.

Trowbridge said the church will decide when the next giveaway will be held.

Because the Salvation Army nationwide is no longer allowed to give away hot meals due to the coronavirus pandemic, a partnership has formed with the St. Vincent de Paul of Trumbull County.

Darlene Jones, CEO of the St. Vincent de Paul, said the dining hall at 2415 Niles Road SE, will serve hot meals, and the Salvation Army will be handing out grocery bags of foods.

Jones said she expects St. Vincent de Paul to almost double the amount of meals it hands out each day from 125 to 200. The organization’s food pantry has moved to the Salvation Army’s Warren location on Franklin Street SE during the virus outbreak.

The Niles Road hall gives out hot meals 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Chris Galgozy of Warren said he decided to help out handing out meals because there is so many facing a difficult time.

Pastor Chuck Gantz of Seeking God’s Glory Ministries said they gave out bagged food to nearly 200 families.

He said the church and others are planning another giveaway on April 4 with details of time and place to be announced on social media.
