Seeing Eye: Displays, vendors set for Black History Month event

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Mount Hope Veterans Memorial Park Inc. will celebrate Black History Month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 at Reed’s Chapel AME Church, 1939 Jacobs Road, Youngstown, with vendors and displays. There also will be a program at noon with a presentation of “Hidden Colors” with speaker James Brown, vice president of the NAACP. For information call 330-501-9808.

HACK IT: The OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology in Youngstown will hold “Hack It” life size operation from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday for children 4 and older. Participants will use circuitry to remake the classic game “Operation” on a larger scale. The program will be on learning about the human body. Call 330-744-5914.

BRIDGE BUILDING: The annual Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building will be take place 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday for students in grades nine to 12 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties at Youngstown State University Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room. The objective of the event is for teams to design and construct a balsa wood bridge that is load-tested until failure. The goal of the competition is to promote engineering as a career choice to students, and to provide students with an educational opportunity to apply their knowledge to a real-world application. Teams include three students and one supervisor.

MEDICAL ALLIANCE: The 16th annual Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance charity brunch and fashion show to benefit the Midlothian Free Clinic and the Canine Campus Service Dog Program will take place Friday at Waypoint Banquet Center, 4180 Westford Place, Canfield. The “Southern Tea”- themed event will begin with a social and raffle at 10 a.m., champagne brunch at 11 a.m. and fashion show at noon. The style show will be presented by Suzanne’s. Alliance members and family will serve as models. Hairstyles will be from Macy’s Southern Park Mall. Music is being provided by Leanne Binder / Songmill Studio.

The cost is $40 a person. Tickets can be obtained online at www.eventbrite.com. The Alliance is a volunteer organization comprised of physician spouses who provide support to the community through health education, legislation, community service and fundraising.
