VALENTINES FOR TROOPS: Stark Memorial in Salem again is one of 1,000 funeral homes across the country sponsoring the Operation Valentine initiative and is asking the community for help. The message of Operation Valentine is simple: “Thank you so much for what you do. We always need you.”

Stark Memorial is asking students and individuals in the area to write messages to troops on Valentine cards or to make handmade cards. Cards cannot include glitter, food or candy.

Valentine cards may be dropped off 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through Feb. 5 at the Stark Memorial office, 1014 E. State St., Salem.

ACTION FOCUSES ON HEALTH: In the wake of Youngstown’s declaration that Youngstown is a food desert, ACTION will assist others in addressing the community’s food insecurities.

A $30,000 grant from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America will assist as ACTION plans to take an active role in helping to change people’s eating habits. ACTION has started “Healthier YOU,” a series of initiative building-workshops that will be held in collaboration with health care professionals and other interested parties to improve the health status of the population.

Collaborators include Mercy Health Nutrition Department, Youngstown State University Dietitian Department, United Health and Lady Buggs Farm. The program will be held 3 to 6 p.m. Jan. 26 at Youngstown’s B&O Station, with discussion on the benefits of eating healthier, as well as the ways in which the new program works.

During the event, attendants will have a chance to engage in food sampling, line dancing, and yoga. Admission is free with registration needed by Sunday at ACTIONoh@aol.com. For questions, call 234-232-9043.

GROUP TO HELP: Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership will hold interview and information sessions for the upcoming employment program, which will be held Feb. 3 to March 12 at MYCAP offices, 1325 Fifth Ave., Youngstown.

Interviews for prospective students will be held 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 and 23. All job seekers will receive computer literacy, financial literacy and assistance with work-related barriers.
